North East
North East Chamber of Commerce
A lack of joined up thinking by the Government has led to the North East being starved of the vital funds needed to improve the region’s road network. There is no better example of this than the A1 Western bypass.
The bypass is a route that runs through Gateshead and Newcastle, passing by Europe’s largest business park. It was identified in a multi-million pound report in 2002 as needing an urgent upgrade to ensure that traffic does not grind to a halt.
The planning process however had put a halt to any immediate development because the Highways Agency used special blocking powers – known as Article 14 notices – to delay or refuse job-creating projects on the basis they would impact significantly on the level of traffic using the bypass.
The North East urgently needs the upgrade to the Western Bypass
