Coastal Dual Carriageway

Channel Chamber of Commerce

The Coastal Dual Carriageway is a project that has been gathering dust on the planners shelves since soon after the 2nd World War. In that time we have seen the building of the M20, the opening of the Channel Tunnel and confirmation of a fast rail link to London.

Whilst travelling north from the South Coast may be comparatively easy, anyone who has travelled along hairpin bends stuck behind tractors will know how hard it is to go east to west.

Despite an inter modal study by the Government saying there is no need for a Costal Link Road, business is crying out for improved links.

Sussex: The A27

Problems caused by the inadequate transport infrastructure in Sussex costs an average of £29,000 per Sussex business each year. Cumulatively, that is a cost of £2 billion to the Sussex economy in one year alone.

Nine out of ten businesses surveyed by Sussex Enterprise, the Sussex Chamber of Commerce, believe that improvements to the east-west coast corridor are crucial to the future of the local economy.

The key to all of this? The A27.

Despite improvements being identified as necessary by the South Coast Multi Modal Study and intervention by local authorities, and the Government has pushed back the necessary improvements.

In 2006, the Regional Transport Board included A27 Chichester in the 2011 to 2016 time frame for funding. However, the A27 at Arundel scheme was pushed back until after 2016 and improvements to the A27 around Worthing are to be reviewed. This is simply not acceptable and untenable for local business.

With increased housing pressures and the need for the Sussex economy to grow it is critical that the future development of the A27 is removed from a planning quagmire and commenced as soon as possible.
